Given limited materials and engineering constraints, students learn how to use the engineering design process to design a prosthetic hand. Students will work in teams in order to develop a model prosthetic hand that can pick up various items, primarily wads of paper. Functionality of the hand will use either pneumatics (air) or hydraulics (liquid) to pick up these items. Integrating teamwork is essential for an engineer as it very important for students to develop communication skills to do design projects. Best for children ages 10-15 years of age.
